Why is paraffin wax a bad choice for candles?

Most candles available today are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin is a petroleum waste product that has to be deodorized and chemically bleached before it can be made into wax. Most candles today are made of paraffin wax which is toxic when inhaled, and can have adverse reactions including nausea, vomiting, and headaches. In fact, the toxins (benzene pollution) released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes and are linked to asthma and lung cancer. The environmental impact of paraffin should also be noted. Petroleum, being the origin of paraffin wax, is considered highly unsustainable, being a non-renewable resource.

What are the better options?

The Candleroom’s natural COCOWAX candles are sustainably made from natural coconut oil and other plant-based waxes, and are 100% paraffin-free. We do not use any petroleum-based additives to all our natural wax candles. The fragrances we use are either 100% natural essential oils, non-toxic fragrances especially designed for candle-making, or a combination of both. We source all our materials responsibly and use only the best and safest ingredients in making our products. Our candles burn clean, and uses up all the wax down to the bottom of the container.

We also make 100% paraffin-free SOY WAX candles. The Candleroom’s natural soy wax candles are formulated to be 100% PARAFFIN-FREE. The fragrances we use are either 100% natural essential oils, non-toxic fragrances specially designed for candle-making, or a combination of both. We source all our materials responsibly and use only the best and safest ingredients in making our products.

*Note: Be careful in buying cheap soy wax candles sold in stores today, as most soy candles are mixed with paraffin wax to be stable enough to burn evenly. There are no regulated standards on how to define “soy” candles today. Many soy candles available are mostly paraffin wax mixed with little soy wax. So if the soy candle you bought seems too good to be true (cheap), then it most likely has paraffin wax in it. Always ask your candle maker if they use 100% natural wax in their candles.

Can’t smell your candles anymore?

Ever wonder why your favorite scents/fragrances sometimes lose their “power” after using them for a while? Have you notice those coffee beans in jars displayed along perfumes in department stores? Ever wonder what they are for? Apparently, the over-stimulation of your sense of smell is what experts call “olfactory fatigue”. So what is this olfactory fatigue? Click here to learn more about this natural phenomenon…
